will be like ten virgins
who took their lamps
and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Five of them were foolish
and five were wise.
The foolish ones took their lamps
but did not take any oil with them.
The wise ones, however,
took oil in jars along with their lamps.
The bridegroom was a long time in coming,
and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
“At midnight the cry rang out:
‘Here’s the bridegroom!
Come out to meet him!’
“Then all the virgins woke up
and trimmed their lamps.
The foolish ones said to the wise,
‘Give us some of your oil;
our lamps are going out.’ “
‘No,’ they replied,
‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil
and buy some for yourselves.’
“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived.
The virgins who were ready went in with him
to the wedding banquet.
And the door was shut.
“Later the others also came.
“Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you,
I don’t know you.’ “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.”

“Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
Fine linen, bright and clean,
was given her to wear.”
(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)
Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.””

“Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”
for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.
I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem,
coming down out of heaven from God,
prepared as a bride beautifully dressed
for her husband.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place
is now among the people,
and he will dwell with them.
They will be his people,
and God himself will be with them
and be their God.
‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
There will be no more death’
or mourning or crying or pain,
for the old order of things has passed away.”
He who was seated on the throne said,
“I am making everything new!”
Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
He said to me:
“It is done.
I am the Alpha and the Omega,
the Beginning and the End.
To the thirsty I will give water without cost
from the spring of the water of life.
Those who are victorious will inherit all this,
and I will be their God
and they will be my children.
But the cowardly, the unbelieving,
the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts,
the idolaters and all liars—
they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.””
